Title: Kids/Beginner Loop from MLE?
Post by: elvinc on December 07, 2018, 12:08:41 AM
Would there be any plans to consider a beginners/kids single track loop from the staging area?

Normally one would say, that's what Hickory Smoked is for with a paved return to the end of the parking lot. But for whatever reason my 6 y.o. daughter would ride the John Muir brown loop and the Marquette kids loop but finds Hickory Smoked to be too much. (She does love the entry to Cemetery.)

What we wind up doing right now instead is parking at Pulaski and riding to Pipeline and around the old research grounds. Not quite singletrack, but not just widetrack either. And not a connect to the staging area.

I know that flagging for the new connector to Burrito Hill end has started/will start. Plans are probably maybe there's no room for consideration here.  Is it good trail system design to have a trail that is relatively green to connect to the widetrack, before transitioning to intermediate/advanced at Burrito?

If that's not possible, there's a lot of room it seems (I'm looking at my Meltdown mapdana) between Long John Slough and Bullwhip/Hickory Smoked , to squeeze in a family/kids loop in there and include a connector to the widetrack.

Looking at MTBproject - most everything but the widetrack in Palos is graded green/blue. Can fun green singletrack be built? I'd say Marquette's Grom loop made it fun for my daughter and me. This would be the missing green core at the staging area to complement the existing surrounding green/blue trails moving out to the solid blue of Psycho Path to Burrito, and black at XX.

That's a great idea to have a true beginner loop running from the staging area, but the issue is getting any trail approved with the Forest Preserve is a long, long process. They are very sensitive to any new trail in the Palos area and any we get must be approved by not only their trail people, but their ecological team which are very protective of special local plants, etc. Right now, we're going to stay focused on the MLE/Burrito connector as that is important to completing a loop at Palos. However over time I can see continuing to improve the staging area with the Pavilion, beginner loop and maybe a skills park like they have at Muir. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks Dave. Appreciate the inside update and I know the process is long for trail approval (seen it since the TURF days).

Figured planning needs to be strategic, but I haven't been able to get to annual/board meetings (long drive from Rogers Park) to see whether a green/beginner trail at the core was part of future strategy or not.

Trail expansion and improvements have been great accomplishments by CAMBr -  Old friends who have moved away before this CAMBr second era of progress would find it hard to recognize the trails we ride today.
