The Salt Creek Greenway trail, which has been on the planning books since the mid 60's, is now very close to completion. It is now possible to ride a major portion (26 mi). Less than 4 miles of this portion is on streets. The trail is well-marked, with some exceptions. Entire projected length of the Greenway trail is 30.6 mi. South of Brookfield Zoo, a paved section starts again around 1st Ave and Ogden.
Aside from having no hills, Salt creek is one of the best trails in Cook County. The surrounding suburbs are beautifully sculpted. It's the sort of perfect community you might want to raise your children in. Salt Creek is a winding, paved trail that's a little older than most others in the county, but it has the right touch of charm. It's forested almost the entire way. At some points backyards sleeve the path on both sides. In other places the trail meanders alongside slow-moving Salt Creek.
Entering the parking lot just off of 31st, across from the Brookfield zoo and hopping on the trail here, cause, in my opinion, this is the best part of the trail and it runs 7.1 miles one way, if you stop and turn around at york rd. As you ride and pickup the pace, you lean the bike over as far as you can to make the sharp left. Once out of the apex of the curve you start cranking as hard as you can until you're about to enter the turn going to the right. Fun Stuff, if you know how to play.
All in all, this is my favort local trail.
