I rode a majority of the race course today (Turf, Psycho Path, 3 Ravines, One Day and Gravity Cavity) and there wasn't a single sign of damage... in fact, I'd venture to say the trails are in the best shape they have been in all year... tacky.

I raced Sport on Sunday, second lap while it was actively raining. I just cringed thinking of what Turf was going to bring, and worried that we were about to cause trail damage if it were to rain harder.  I was so relieved when I got to Turf on second lap to see that trail damage was not occurring (even though the trails were scary slick for us Sport riders). They were wetter than greasy, and some tire marks were showing, but no ruts, rises, or bumps were occurring. The trails were no where near the soupy conditions of spring/early summer rainy season. The fantastic job of armoring that the CAMBr Volunteer Trail Crew has done, has brought these trails light years ahead of where they were even last year, and from years past, so that they now drain well and dry faster, and the mud pots don't develop since the former mud pot locations are now under rock.

Last night, I rode Pipeline, 3 Ravines and Gravity Cavity (but not Turf). They were so well packed down from the Steam-Roller effect of the Comp/Expert Racers, that no ruts or bumps remain. The damp conditions, but not wet/soup, were such that the Racers actually helped flatten out the bumps and ruts. Whatever marks we earlier riders in Novice and Sport caused, then the Comp / Expert riders came through and flattened them out. That, combined with the wind and sun of the afternoon, was luckily, the perfect combination of conditions that flattened out the trails.

As Stan said in the parking lot last night, 'The Race actually flattened out the trail bumps. We should run a race on Double X to get some of the bumps out. :-)".

exactly.

having that many tires on the damp top layer actually HELPS the trails more than it damages them.

What Stan didn't tell you is not only was a crew out inspecting the trails, several other crews started at 6:30 in the morning making sure all the drains were open and everything was 100% ready to ride without suffering any damage. As well as performing last minute touch ups.

That is way beyond awesome.  The level of dedication the crew has for the trails never ceases to amaze me.

Stan had the entire back up route mapped out and ready to go early last week, complete with mileage and lap count.

I'm very curious, what was the backup route?

While I don't know, I would guess that the back-up plan for the case where TURF was not rideable but everything else was would just have involved a left hand turn onto Dynamite Road rather than the right hand turn that we used.  That would have taken you to Three Ravines without needing to go thru TURF and Psychopath.  That would have been a simple change that wouldn't have required much work on the ground and just perhaps an extra lap for most categories.

If additional singletrack was bad besides just TURF, then that's a wholesale change in the course which would be harder for me to predict.

Glad you did it when you got home Cory.  I know I wouldn't help clean you up!

I do have to say that the trails were SUPERAWESOME today and definitely required high fiving in the staging area after!
