Latest SWK Trail Conditions

The home page's trail status is updated as info comes to us. If you've been out and know the conditions here or the home page's trail status are not current, post up with what you found. We'll take care of updating the home page.

Keep in mind that after any substantial rain the trails will need at least one warm sunny day to dry out. Give the trails time to dry before heading out, both for the sake of avoiding unnecessary damage and not creating lots of extra maintenance work for the volunteers who generously pitch in to give all of us a great ride.

Also, since the fast-growing honeysuckle and buckthorn obscures sight lines at corners, there is a greater risk of collisions. Call out your presence at blind turns or before dropping into a ravine. If you feel a maintenance job is getting overlooked, we would welcome your participation at a trail workday. More bodies makes shorter work of the to-do list.

Conditions guidelines:
Noting downed trees, ride-related damage, trail surface conditions or water/flooding - GOOD

Guessing on weather, trail surface condition, or what's out there - BAD

Discussing anything other that current conditions, including complaining about other trail users - also BAD. Start a new thread if you need to.

Keeping it short and to the point - ALWAYS GOOD!

Reports will be removed after 5 days.

Someone has been taking it upon themselves to do trailwork, and not the helpful kind. This can both damage our standing with the land managers, and lead to changes that may not be in the best interests of the park. If you're doing it, stop. If you see some neighbor kid doing it, tell them they're creating more problems than they're solving. If you have to, call the cops.

If anyone sees someone messing up the trails (the legal ones), ask them to leave them to the park disrict to look after. And maybe take a pic of the person - which ought to make them think twice about getting caught by the authorities. They could have good intentions and just be misguided, or they have a beef with the trails and this is their way to take out their anger. Either way, avoid starting an argument with another trail user over their actions. Mountain bikers tend to get a bad rap (high-speed punks tearing up the place and scaring hikers off...), so some courtesy goes a long way to break stereotypes. If you think they're up to no good, you could either tail them until they bug out (no one likes being watched doing something they shouldn't), or call the cops if they look to be creating hazards for others.

The OPD is looking for IDs on anyone doing their own work out there. If you spot someone and can put a license plate # to them, pass it on. And they'll be working to close any new routes they find. Side note, it's a lot harder to make a new trail legal when there's a bunch of illegal stuff making the OPD more agitated over what's going on out there.

The person who used a chainsaw on Dominator showed the OPD that they don't have much training in using a chainsaw... beyond knowing how to turn it on. That impacts our recent efforts to try getting power tools approved on workdays.

Most trails are pretty good. What's dry is actually over-dry - sand is very loose. What's wet is typically under deep water.

Wildcat/Timberwolf, don't even bother - too much deep water.
Anaconda, wet at the bottom of that big hill but ridable. Otherwise good.
Vertical Velocity, good but if you try the loop-back you'll hit uncrossable water.
Boulderdash, wet at the back of the quarry but walkable.
Vortex, flooded at the back of the bubble - stick to the main section.
Dominator/ConcessionStand/Bobcat, good.
Jack Rabbit, good with a lot of water in the water crossing.
Colossus, lotta water at the start but otherwise good. Watch the sand.
Kentucky Rumbler, good to go.

Rode Anaconda, Jackrabbit, Colossus, Dominator, Vertical and most of Wildcat this morning. The trails are in great shape. Water crossings you'd expect on Jackrabbit and Colossus. There's a swampy patch on the Vertical loop I had to hike over, but otherwise it's great. Lots of horse manure after last Sunday's equestrian event.

WARNING: There's a low fallen limb or trunk hanging over Dominator, right after the "new" berm (going counter-clockwise), right at head level. I nearly got clocked by it. Watch out for that.
