The difference with everything you mentioned above is that the transfer of money occurs with all of those situation.  No money is transferred in this case, so SSN is completely unecessary IMO.

I guess you've never been a victim of identity theft.  GO through that process and then let's chat.
How is an accurate background check supposed to happen without a SSN?

Sorry to answer a questiong with a question, but are they limiting volunteers to American Citizens only?

There are plenty of ways to verify a person's background without a SSN to the county.  Driver's License numbers work quite well.  The state already has the SSN on file associated with the DL#.

To continue the trend of a question for a question What about people who don't drive cars? Also what you propose is one agency sharing your info with another without your permission.

The short version of this is you can either provide the requested information or contact Kane Co to see if they will allow alternative methods.  At the end of the day the land manager makes the rules we have to adbide by.

Is the class necessary? There is zero chance I'm ever going to be at that location at 7pm on a Monday. If they do one at 8pm during the week, or on a weekend I can do it but i work till 7 and it's an hour drive from my work without evening rush hour, plus I'd stop home and bring my wife with me.

Over time they would like all volunteers that participate in workdays to do the orientation session. You will still be able to help out if you do not go to the orientation session. There may be restriction on the type of equipment you can use.

Regards
Mike

I strongly second this!  It is an absolute nightmare!

FYI for this evening, when you enter the Fox Valley Ice Arena, take the elevator that is about 50 yards into the arena on the right to the third floor. This is where the Kane County Headquarters are located. I am sure a few of us will be up for dinner afterwards.

Please remember to bring your forms.

See you tonight.

Great turnout tonight, thank you for those that made it out. Your names will be entered into the Kane County database as volunteers. Hopefully we get the agreement approved next week at which stage workdays will be scheduled.

I will find out the procedure to follow for those who were not able to take it out tonight. I believe that you will still be able to volunteer but we will not be given the credit for the hours that you worked. Kane County would like all regular volunteers to go through orientation. We will keep you posted on developments.

Regards
Mike
