I use a app called runtastic mountain bike for my iPhone  I use the free version but bought a upgrade to play music through the app( not worth it, play iPod or pandora). The app it slef for tracking gps, calories, elevation, pace and distance. It's great. I use every ride. Mainly to figure out SWK.

I've been using Strava on my cell phone. It's cycling specific, not mtn bike only. Several of my friends are using the app too, and it's cool to compare our performance on our respective rides.

Cyclemeter works for me. It's fun to compare your activity, either for XC ski, Cycle, DH ski, Drive, Hike, Mountain Bike, Run, Skate, Swim, and Walk.  I only use the MTB or Drive though.

I'm curious as to how well the celly would hold up during the swim test.
But seriously, how well do the cell apps track out on the trails? I've thought about downloading an appm but am skeptical of their performance.

I started using Strava recently and it's the best I've tried (like endomondo, mapmyride, easytrails, etc).  All these fitness/tracking apps seem to collect, more or less, the same info.  It is how the data is used and displayed, either in the app or on their website, that make sets them apart.

Accuracy is determined by the device mostly and varies from phone to phone but an actual GPS device is going to be much more accurate.  Whether you need that is up to you.

Bottom line is that they are free so just try some of them and see what you like best.
