I am new to bike mechanics. I do not know much at all. I have picked up a few books and have reading the forums to get the terminology down and try to understand how to fix some of these easy issues myself. I apologize if this is hard to understand do to my lack of knowledge on the subject.

I have SRAM X7 front and back derailleur. Cassette is 11-36t 10 speed. Crank FSA 42T.

When I’m on the smallest ring by the crank and the largest ring on the cassette (not sure if that’s considered gear 1 or 10) for this example we will call it 1. I shift from 1 to 2 with no issues. When I shift to 3 it stays on ring 2 on the cassette, but makes a loud clicking noise and never fully engages. I switch again and it simply skips 3 and jumps right to 4. I don’t have this issue when I shift the other way from 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. I have no other issues on the smallest ring by the crank.

Moving to the middle ring on by my crank. My next issue is when shifting from the small ring to the middle ring the same issue above happens. It never fully engages and is caught in the middle clicking. When I shift again it goes immediately up into the big ring by the crank. When I shift down the other way there is no issue going from 3,2,1 – big ring to small ring. When I shift through the gears on the cassette I have the same issue as above in my first paragraph…going from gear 2 to 3 it falls in the middle and never fully engages. If I shift again it falls into the fourth ring on the cassette with no issues coming back the other way.

Once I’m on the biggest ring by the crank I can shift up and down both directions with no issues. My only concern here is it is noisy on the biggest ring of cassette. It makes a bunch of click, click, click.

Any suggestions would be helpful! I live off 95th and Kean if anyone from the Palos area would be willing to take a look

Thanks,
Eric

Show up at the staging area tonight.  There is a big group ride and there will be a bunch of guys with an opinion, and most will be good.

It sounds like a cable adjustment issue, which may involve the limit adjustments on the derailleur as well.

Ask for Burak, Stan, or Marcin and tell them Jerry sent you.  After they razz you for taking my advice, I'm sure they will give you a hand.  It would be best to get to them before they get to the cooler.

If you are getting advice from me, I would strongly suggest you get a second opinion.

Ah made it back to the board too late. I will not be able to make it out there tonight.

I will find these guys at a work day or the next group ride if I do not figure it out myself from some videos online.

Thanks for the advice!

I've had similar experience in the past with shifting issues where it would hang shifting down but work fine shifting up.

I tried watching all the on line stuff from SRAM (which is very good for the basics) but still it wouldn't shift right.

At the meltdown a few years ago I talked to a mechanic from 2Bici bike shop who was offering free tune ups and his tip was that often issues like this are related to dirt getting in the cable housings causing excess friction.  He unhooked the cables from their stops (without disconnecting anything) and cleaned them up a bit and also applied some lubricant that was specific for cables and everything worked great.

Now I do this as part of my routine cleaning and haven't had any issues.  If you ride crushed limestone when it is wet out it is even more important because that grit gets everywhere.
