They just called me with an update, upon completely disassembling it and fully checking it out I was correct in that it was not a seperated sealed bearing, it was indeed a loose ball bearing. He said they called Specialized and they are sending out a sealed bearing headset to replace it with.... like the bike was spec'd to have to begin with.

I'm not sure why people feel its ok to only say when they have a positive experience with ANY retailer... I think positive and negative reviews should be expected and even if you don't like what the review says its the right of the consumer to voice their opinion, it's ours to base any validity in it or just shake our heads, move on or comment otherwise. Personally I agree that if you spend TWO THOOOUSAND DOLLARS on anything that doesn't have a motor or computer you should expect TWO THOOOUSAND DOLLARS of piece of mind when it comes to the purchase.

I picked it up tonight, they warrantied the headset and replaced it. I'm glad it didn't cost me anything but their work was a little sloppy, there was grease on the seat post and the head tube the attention to detail isn't there, for example I always try to align the spacers and headset so the logos are symmetrical, they did not. They gave me my bike and said hang on we'll give you your old stem cap and something else back... they didn't replace that, they said one person started on my bike and another finished it so they saw the parts sitting on the bench and weren't sure if they were mine. That inspires a whole lot of confidence in their work this round In the end it didn't cost me any money, just a solid week of perfect weather where I couldn't commute to work and some frustration, but I'm definitely finished with that shop. I've been very unimpressed with them and they absolutely did not do anything change my opinion, in fact they reinforced it.

Ryan, im not a huge Performance Bike fan but the tech at the Schaumburg store knows what he is doing. I dont remember his name but he is this old crazy guy who has won tons of races and is well known. He loves bikes and does good work. Their prices for service arent bad either.

Sorry, any good wrench that works at the "p" store could do better if he was that good. That place sucks. Its on the same list as walmart.

Performance hired Gary Fisher?? Maybe, he sold his soul to trek and they killed his line off. Same thing they did to Keith Bontrager and Klein and others.

I'm pretty sure Performance could afford to pay someone more than a small single store bike shop. Just saying.....

Ive worked at both; they're honestly about on par $$ wise.

I don't know their pay system, but if there was a good mechanic they COULD afford to pay them more. That's all I'm saying. The implication that a good mechanic wouldn't work at Performance is kinda silly. Many people work because they make money and go where they're paid the most.
