so here is the deal, my bike has the following set up on the 3x10:
- FSA Comet mega EXO 175mm 22-32-44t
- Standard Sram 11-36 in the rear

I found lately that I'd love to have full functionality of the 44t and entire rear for most of the trails in Chicago area and maybe occasionally drop it to the middle when i'm really tire, or the hill is really steep. Basically, granny gear needs to go. The thing is that with the 44t as the top ring I get chain cross and doesn't make my rear fully useable, especially for the taller gears.

How do I convert to 2x10 so that I can retain the 32-44 or maybe as low as 28-40(38)?? Do I need a full new crank or are there rings that will fit on the current crank, having 28 as a granny and 40(or 38) in the middle with bash at the top?

T. A. Specialites makes all kinds of ring combinations you may think of just check them out. Just be patient website is French and kind of awkward.

Raceface and Shimano make 104bcd rings that will work with standard mtn cranks. Make sure your big ring is ramped for shifting. I had problems using a SS BIG ring on a 2x10 set up I just built.

I think 38/28ish would be fine around here.

hmmm, that "chinook" model offering looks promising.

If for some reason I can't get it is there any way to have the crank shifted to the left, closer to the frame, to eliminate the chain cross in the top ring? Basically, can I position the top ring in the place of the middle one or somewhere in between?

You probably have BB spacers on the drive side that you can move over to the non-drive side, but I'm not sure if it will cause alignment issues with your FD.

Also watch the clearance between the chain stay and crank arm.
