After seeing the temps drop a little, I decided to tough it out and ride tonight.  My intention was to take Pipeline, Dynamite Road, Canal and back up to One Day and HCM.  Well, after Pipeline, I took a wrong turn at Post 15 and wound up taking Psycho and Turf back up to Pipeline.  I then took the LEFT fork at Post 15 to the trailhead for Dynamite (Post 16) where I came across the only other biker I would see this evening.

He was trying to pump up his tire with no result.  He had pinch flatted going up Dynamite and replaced the tube, but it wasn't holding air.  We tried patching his pinch flatted tube without success.  So we take his currently mounted tube out to try figure out what was wrong with it and we found that the tube was torn at the base of the valve stem - unrepairable.  I let him have my spare tube and he was on his way (good thing he was also on a 26").

During the repair attempt, he had told me that he had parked up in the forest preserve by 2bici.  Like I said, he was the only other biker I had seen out there and in the 20 minutes we spent trying to fix his two tubes, NOBODY else rode by.   If I hadn't made a wrong turn earlier, I would have missed him or crossed paths with him before he got a flat and he would have had a very long walk back to his car.

So anyways, if you carry a spare tube, make sure its in good shape and can hold air.

Great post and an excellent reminder. I just checked the spare tube I keep in the storage pouch under my bike seat and it was completely dried out and cracked along the fold. Just like replacing your smoke detector batteries, we should check these things every so often.

Side note, I'm wondering if there are products out there that increase the longevity of tubes and prevent cracking? Maybe spray the tubes with ArmorAll?

I am in the process of sonverting to UST.  What do you guys suggest as a back up option for that.  It IS possible to get a flat, right?  Should I be carrying a spare tube to pop in?  What is do people typically do?

I'm running UST and the worst that has happened so far is air getting burped out if the tire experiences a big lateral load such as sliding into a rut going up Ho Chi Minh.  In that case you just pump air back in.

I carry a presta valved backup tube because that's what my wheelset can accept in case something fails on the UST system.

I think if you want to go one step further you could just carry an extra folding UST tire but maybe that's an extreme measure more suitable for longer rides that aren't localized in one area.

I run tubeless and I carry a spare tube and some Co2. I'm going to switch back to a pump though. One Co2 isn't enough to fill a 29er tire.

Now that I think about it, you'd want to carry a Presta valve spare anyways since it'll also fit a Schrader wheel in a pinch. (like the guy on Thursday).

Coincidentally, the Saturday after I posted this there was a guy in the staging area who had just discovered his spare tube was completely dry rotted.

I remember reading this post and saying to myself I need to pick up an extra inner tube.. yeah.. never made time to do that. Last minute bike ride on Sunday at Palos and I end up with a flat. I was another victim sitting at the staging area with a friends empty tube of patching glue and everyone having 29r size tubes

Serves me right.. i was warned.

(FYI. I pinched between the two tree's before the crypt with the stones in between. Nice loud pop
