... i am in again.
Awesome.

Roughing out plans for a NYE trip right now.  Current thinking is to head up on Tuesday 12/29 or maybe Wednesday 12/30 and then come back on Sunday 1/3.  Promises to be 4-5 days of powdery fun.

How long a drive (timewise) is it to Mt Bohemia?  Assume its not terrible winter weather.

It's around an 8 hour drive.  That's the short answer.

The long answer is Mt. Bohemia is actually on eastern time, and that factors into how we usually do it...

Leave in the afternoon sometime, head up through Green Bay and in about 5 hours you will be in Iron Mountain, MI. Plenty of choices here for food and fuel, so stop and take a break. If you want to, you can spend the night here, or continue driving. In about 1 hour you will be in Baraga, where you can spend the night or continue on to Houghton which is about 2 hours away, but go no further than that. In the morning get up and finish the drive. Mt. Bohemia is about 1 hour past Houghton. Also keep in mind that Iron Mountain is on Central time, but Baraga and Houghton are both in the Eastern time zone.

On the way home, we usually ride until around 2pm eastern or until everyone in the group is too exhausted and/or injured to continue. Then we begin the drive home and arrive around 9pm Central, which is a very reasonable time to get home, shower, and be well rested for work the next morning.

Is this place really leaps and bounds better than Cascade, Devil's head, Chestnet, etc? I can't imagine it being anything like out west, is driving the 8 hours really worth it?

totally different from the places you mention. it is off-piste. 100% natural snow. no grooming. really only a few "runs". mostly what you do is get off the chair, go into the trees, and then come out again at the bottom. if you like trees and powder, this is the place. if you like wide open groomers and cruisers this is not for you.

This definately sounds awesome. I am in for a trip up there. Unfortunately, it can't be for NYE.

If you think you will get there for even just one weekend, buy the pass.  It's a one day only sale this Saturday.
Here is one of my favorite photos of snoboarder77, on a little thing they call Icefall. He is taking it the easy way.
It's right near the lift exit, and one of the more open areas. A lot of the place is way tighter than this.
He also did some gnarlier 30ft drops on Goldilocks, and there are a few hairy chutes all over there too.

remember when we timed the gate right and violated goldilocks
she was all used up and spent for the rest of the day after we were done with her.

this is a picture of what we are going to look like if they dont start getting some snow. well not what i will look like (i ski).

Sandboarding does look fun and all, but they are starting to get some snow. Still a long way to go until NYE.

John Dee is starting to talk seriously about winter. He tossed in this gem too.

the names for the new buyers needed to be in by yesterday. you will have to pay the full whopping $99 price on saturday.

And everybody getting a pass, needs to buy their pass themselves, whether you are doing it on your own or as part of the promotional thing. The resort will sort out the teamups and such later. So again as a reminder, if you want a Bohemia Pass you must buy yours yourself THIS SATURDAY. No Exceptions.

The only place I usually have to hike out of is the lower haunted valley. I only go there after the pow pow has been played out on the rest of the mountain. Snowboarders may have some hiking to do in the outer limits as well, but tele folks seem to just love it out there.

Is the place you are talking about the bottom of the badlands and the back country? From there you just ride out to the road and they have a bus that will take you back to the lift. Good times.
