Join us for some much-needed trail work at a gem of a local trail! The to-do list will be announced just ahead of the day, once we get final park district approval for the work and date. Check back for more info. If you enjoy the trails here, put in some time to give back and help make the place even better. We really need the extra hands. See all the West workdays here, split by destination.

Meet up will be at 9am, location tbd. We'll go over the day's work and head into the trail by 9:15.

We're looking to get some trimming done at the far SW end of the park, before things start feeling crowded. We might also throw some leftover rock into a low spot near the start of Jack Rabbit. Join us at the 2nd lot at 9, with lunch after the workday.

I'm figuring on a 7am ride, but others will likely ride after lunch. SEE YA THERE!!

Don't forget, the skeeters are out so pack bug spray. Some ice-cold water would be good too since the temps are notching up some.

Candy for the other trail workers would be nice. Comments about how Landis has really taken a dive... not required but good to have ready. Wanting the trail coordinator's autograph... now that would just make me blush. I'd probably turn around fast. And then I'd poke my face on a branch and bleed alot. How am I gonna look good at the photo shoot for my commemorative t-shirts with this beautiful mug all torn up?!

I have another running race that morning.  Would it be possible to meet out later?  I really have to stop signing up for all these races!  If I can meet up later, where and until what time?

Since the poison ivy has come back as usual, I went and wrote up a long article on dealing with it.

The short version is that riders and trail volunteers should expect to contact poison ivy at SWK, as at any riding destination.

• Wiping down with rubbing alcohol shortly after contact should help, as will washing with a grease-cutting detergent.
• Changing clothes is important to ensure you don't transfer the oil to your car or home, where you or others can get a rash for months to come.
• A hair dryer does wonders to shut down the itch from a rash.
• If you're on top of it, any rash you get should be minor and you only have to treat it for about a week. Plus, using the hair dryer trick means you hardly even know you have a rash.

Great article Dom.  Thanks for writing it!  I want to clarify, however, that Zanfel/Mean Green works both right after coming in contact with the oil as well as after the rash/itch has developed.  In fact, I typically use Mean Green only after I already have an itch that won't go away and it stops the itch immediately 90% of the time with one or two one minute applications/rinses.  You may consider clarifying this in the article because it reads now like Zanfel/Mean Green is only a pre-rash wash and it's real strength is stopping an existing itch like the hairdryer trick.

The first time I used Mean Green I had a pretty good rash that itched like crazy for a couple of days before my tub arrived.  After one treatment, the itch was gone PERMANENTLY.  I was amazed because I've never seen anything work this well at getting rid of the itch!

sorry, I'm going to miss the workday.  I have a guy coming over to look at the Tassajara for sale.  You guys will be done by the time he gets here, looks and I could make it out there.

I modified the article to be more clear. I have a free sample of the Mean Green stuff and used it Friday on my neck and elbow. I can't say it permanently removed the itch but the itch that returned yesterday and today has been a small fraction of what I felt on Friday! I should use it again to try and finish the job.

Thanks to the 10 people who showed up today and whacked their way along Colossus! I haven't had a chance to see everything that was done, but I know it'll be a lot better than how it was. We also got the start of Jack Rabbit in better shape, though with the height of the water there we might need to revisit that section—it doesn't appear that there's much protection from future flooding. Overall it was a good day's work!
